| Inexpensive Disability Equipment |
[Oct. 30th, 2009|08:05 am] |
FYI: There is a new Michigan-based website where people can buy, sell or give away assistive technology (AT) by the Michigan Disability Rights Coalition. Their site is at www.atxchange.org
(I remember a discussion with someone about inexpensive disability equipment at the ConClave GT Suite but can't remember who, so I'm posting this here and on LJ.) |

| RIF's |
[Dec. 3rd, 2008|07:38 am] |
|
I appear to have survived this round of RIF's. Our lab just lost 2 out of 13 after attrition reductions of 3 more in the last year. Scary times indeed in the durable goods industries. Everything that is purchased on a loan is stalled right now due to the credit crisis, including the much vaunted automotive transplants like Honda and Toyota, not just the (not so) Big Three. Hopefully I can make it to June of 2010, and then I'll be able to leave if needed without having to look for work. |

| Back from Las Vegas |
[Jun. 18th, 2008|06:00 am] |
Went to Las Vegas last week for a conference on the LIMS (Lab Information management System) software that I manage. First time in Las Vegas, what an amazingly tacky place. I don't gamble, but I was able to get to three shows; Stomp at Planet Hollywood, Blue Man Group at the Venetian and Cirque de Soliel's O at the Bellagio. On the first evening of the meeting, the dinner was followed by a nightclub style magic act as well, so I was busy. All were excellent! I was staying at the Venetian's Palazzo, a second tower that just opened this year that connects to the Sands Convention Center and original Venetian via an absurdly upscale mall with a gondola canal ride running through it. Food was also good, was able to dine one night at Emeril Lagassi's Table 10; a baked goat cheese salad with olives followed by roast leg of lamb with mushrooms, and another at Mario Batali's Enoteca San Marco: a Caprese salad followed by veal meatballs over polenta finishing with assorted biscotti and Cappuccino. Both meals were simply prepared but very well made. I guess it makes sense that the two cooks are so well done...
I'm glad to be able to now say I've been to 'Vegas and am sure that I won't be going back again except on business, and hopefully on expense account!
BTW, the conference was informative and productive, so a good week in all. |

| New Orleans |
[Apr. 11th, 2008|10:14 am] |
Just back from the American Chemical Society Meeting in New Orleans. Very busy, very productive trip with airline delays on both ends. Last Friday, transferred in Memphis and had 2 hour weather delay and so missed my first meeting that evening, then on the way home, waited nearly an hour to get a gate in Detroit after arriving on the ground on time. Understandably, all the people with connections were irritated! I just wanted to get home.
The convention and tourist areas of New Orleans are almost completely back to their "Pre-Katrina" capabilities and our 15,000 member convention went very well. I was able to get some great food at K-Paul's and at the Palace Cafe (one of the ubiquitous Brenner restaurants in the city).
Since I'm involved in the governance of the society, most of my time is taken up with committee meetings, but I was able to get to the exposition floor on Tuesday for several hours. While I was there, someone vaguely familiar greeted me and asked if I was still attending SF conventions in Michigan. Dave Peters, who left the area to attend graduate school in Berkeley about 10 years ago and was at the meeting from his job at ATMI in Burnet, Texas. We were only able to talk briefly but he seems well and is still attending SF cons in Texas. |

[May. 21st, 2006|10:05 am] |
Just back from Central Region Meeting of ACS in Frankenmuth, MI.
The Midland group ran an excellent convention. Detroit is scheduled to run a similar meeting in 2012, so our group was there to see how some veterans put a program together.
My company had a booth and we were there to "sell" the company as a place for scientific research and to increase name recognition in the field, rather than to sell our products, so booth duty was fun, getting to talk to the students and faculty about the processes and making things instead of to customers.
Frankenmuth...way to cute but I liked the food. |
